The Engagement Calendar

-->
The blog is a day late this week.  Sorry to all the many readers who were left with nothing to do last night.  Its unacceptable and will not happen again.

Unless of course I find a suitable excuse – which this week was because I managed to get to the Paralympics at the stadium on Friday morning! Yeeeay!  It was great and all the things I read about it being inspirational, moving, fantastic for ‘normalising’ disability… its all true.  Thanks to my 10 year old for winning the tickets.

The Javelin throwers warming up:  they broke the WR 3 times!

So the reshuffle happened this week – my morning tweet that day was surprisingly astute – Mr Lansley was indeed replaced.  I am not sure what Jeremy Hunt’s arrival will mean for Health and the NHS – I am not sure reshuffles are that significant other than introducing new faces and headlines, new gusto, distancing government’s from previous negative PR and so on.  The policies remain the same – for better or for worse depending on your stance.  Then again, Justine Greening’s departure is according to many commentators a strong indicator that the government’s stance on Heathrow may change – so perhaps there can be something in a new face?

I am glad my blog waited til Saturday this week anyway as something grabbed my attention earlier today.  Last year MES gentlemen partook in Movember (and in fact the women too though a penciled-on moustache was suspect) – the annual global moustache growing exercise to raise money for and awareness of Men’s health issues About Movember. I see that the Chief Medical Officer has just launched Stoptober – About Stoptober – to energise the nation’s smokers to quit.  I like the name but feel we could do a lot more with this concept.  I propose a new ‘Engagement Calendar’, which will, eventually, become the new standard around the whole world:
  1. Banuary (send your top 5 list of things you would like to see banned to your MP; the nation’s favourites have to be considered by Parliament!)
  2. Ignorecelebruary (stop paying so much attention to celebrities and reading Hello! and partake in worthy things)
  3. March (March for good causes – you see what I did there?)
  4. Campaipril (Campaign for good worthy causes – it may need to come before March as these normally follow campaigns though)
  5. Mayke New Friends  (the only one I don’t need to explain)
  6. June (I have struggled for 2 hours with this one so we’ll keep it as is)
  7. Jury (Jury Service, though I accept this may put some pressure on the criminal justice system during that month)
  8. Moregust (Do a little bit more for your community!)
  9. Excertember (Get fit!)
  10. Stoptober (We know this one)
  11. Movember (We know this one too)
  12. Petitionember (start or sign at least one petition you feel strongly about)
Its much more meaningful isn’t it!  And tells us each month what we should be doing to be involved, engaged and energized about things!

Feel free to improve any of these ideas.  In December we’ll petition and I predict this initiative will be law by 2014.  Without a doubt.
